ExtrAXION is the digital takeoff software which speeds up the quantity surveying and estimating procedure through several alternative methods of measurement.
ExtrAXION facilitates fast and accurate measurements of items, lengths, areas and volumes from both image (BMP, GIF, JPG, TIF  etc.) and vector (DWG, DXF, DGN, DWF, EMF etc.) plans, as well as from PDF multi-page files.
The cost estimation process is completed by automatic transfer of the measurements at the project Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). The results of the measurements can also be exported to excel files for further calculation.
ExtrAXION is ideal for architects, quantity surveyors and contractors to speed up the estimating process for new buildings or renovations and allow for a higher number of successful bids.


Using ExtrAXION you can:

  • Start the takeoff process from any image or vector file type, as soon as possible, using a simple, yet powerful tool.
  • Minimize the time needed for measurements, using tools that significantly accelerate the procedure, such as selective copying of measurements from one drawing to another, measurement reproduction, library with parameters and user-defined measurement types.

New tools and functionality

Improved graphic interface

  • New main menu with master tabs. Descriptive and intuitive icons have been added to all commands (toolbars, context etc.).
  • One click ability to choose the color theme from several predefined options.

  • Users can “undock” the Measurements and WBS tab to move it to another display or another position on the current one.

Wall thickness – offset

  • New line type with user defined width that is always in scale is available now. This allows better viewing of wall measurements which is filled with user defined transparency level. Users can draw left, right or middle main lines on top of existing lines to snap on and create the wall measurement.
  • The same method can be used to measure the offset from walls. For example to measure and calculate excavation backfilling around a building.
  • Inner and outer wall areas or excavation backfilling volume can be easily calculated using new result parameters (RL, RR, AL, AR, LL, LR).

Break down and manipulate measurement elements such as figures and sides on the drawing.

  • Copy or move all the figures or sides of a measurement to a new or existing measurement in order to link it to a different work item (example)
  • Split a length or area measurement to its figures with automatic creation of several measurements (one per figure) in order to link each of them to different work items (example)

Automatically count blocks with their specific text attributes

  • Search for objects can be by block, by text or combination of both (example)

Undo function

  • Improved undo feature: Ability to undo actions on drawings going back several steps. 
  • Actions on measurements can be undone even if the measurement is completed as long as the drawing remains open in ExtrAXION.

New quick steps

Easily locate a measurement

  • Rapidly find measurements on the WBS or Measurements tab by double clicking on a measurement on the drawing. This scrolls to the relevant line and highlights it.

Move / copy measurements to a work item.

Move or simply copy selected measurements, on the WBS tab, to another work item with just 2 clicks (examples)


Edit multiple measurements

Additional quick ways to edit simultaneously multiple measurements (selected even from different drawings or work items) to change their description, color and line weight:
  • Description: through automatic algorithms using available fields and excel like formulae. This way users can apply rules to quickly rename measurements fitting their needs.
  • Color and line weight: with fill-down functionality.
Find measurement work items
  • On the Measurements tab, go directly to the work items which are linked to the active measurement. This allows users to quickly see details (work items and formulae), edit, add or remove work items, even on drawings that are not open in ExtrAXION.

Delete key

  • One can use directly the Delete key from the keyboard, in addition to the “Delete” X button of the toolbars.

Other features and enhancements

 B&W mode visibility and layers color

  •  Ability to highlight one or more drawing layers in B&W mode by changing the layer(s), respective color(s) while all other drawing elements are gray. In addition visible layers in B&W mode can be different from those in normal mode.
  • The program retains the color or B&W mode even when a drawing is closed (incl. any layer colors in B&W mode per above). 

New temporary validation measurement tool 

  • New tool to measure length and area temporarily (not saved in the project) showing all segment lengths, area and node coordinates. This feature allows users to check and copy the selected information to another application. Can also be used to verify the scale.

Improved legends

  • All elements of a legend can be customized to fit the needs of the user (Colors, fonts, grid lines, column and line specs etc.). Legend types are stored in the Library for future use.
  • Sorting order of lines in legends can be defined.   

Customized labels

  • Ability to define label content (identifier, quantity, unit, etc.)
  • Various templates for position labels available.
  • Internal and external side labels (eg. for thick walls).

Duplicate Rebar elements

  • Duplication of Rebar structural element is now available in the Rebars Add-on just like standard measurements duplication.

Cloud sync

  • Cloud synchronized project files are better supported through an automatic creation of temporary local copies. 


  • Measurement notes are shown in a drop down text box

Data in the cloud

Accessibility and safety

  • Storing all data (projects and library) on a cloud based SQL Server database is now optimized, providing maximum security and fast access from anywhere.
  • Automatic synchronization of on-premises stored .sdf project files with cloud locations like Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, etc. is now available.

Organization of drawings

Multi-level organization in hierarchical tree levels (folders) and simplified drawing addition

  • Folders and various levels of sub-folders, can be added for better organization of drawings (e.g. classification of drawings by floor or by type, such as Structural, Architectural etc.)
  • Drawings and measurement sheets can now be added in a single window for improved drawing management.

Addition of selected drawing parts

Any rectangular snapshot of a drawing’s part can be added with all its data as a separate drawing

  • Ability to select a rectangular portion of a drawing and add it as a separate drawing in ExtrAXION. This way the user can better manage the drawing and have a better view of the relevant part of the drawing (thumbnail view, automatic zoom extents etc.)
  • This feature allows insertion of various parts of a drawing, each with a different scale (e.g. in cases of cross sections or details where the scale used is usually bigger).
  • Software performance optimization since each portion is of a smaller MB size.
  • Available on vector drawings as well as on .pdf files that are converted to vector.

Support of .dwf files

.dwf drawing files can now be added in any project

  • .dwf files can be used simultaneously with all the other types of files already supported by ExtrAXION (.dwg, .dxf, .dgn, .pdf, .bmp, .gif, .jpg etc.).
  • Each .dwf Layout is added as a different drawing, like an individual page in a multipage pdf.

Counting objects by searching text

Automatic finding and counting of items that are labeled with specific text (similar to the method of counting blocks)

  • Ability to search text (e.g. text labels such as “XX” Lights, “YY” vents, “ZZ” sliding windows) inserted in vector drawings.
  • A specific region of the drawing can be selected in order to narrow down the area of the search.
  • Additional search options of “Match case” and “Find whole words only”.

Auxiliary drawings

Assist calculations by opening additional drawings to perform temporary measurements

  • Temporarily measure length or area in auxiliary drawings opened in a separate window.
  • Can be used as parameters in the measurements of the principal drawing or for information/validation purposes.

Other features and enhancements

  • In addition to horizontal and vertical dimension, scaling can also be done using a diagonal dimension without the need to rotate the drawing.
  • Enhanced conversion of pdf drawings to vector and new option in settings: “Convert white elements”.
  • “Cube” tool in 3d view now available, allowing easier navigation (rotating, changing view etc.)

New architecture that supports ExtrAXION Add-ons

  • Following the ExtrAXION Rebar Add-on, more modules will be released to be used on a bolt-on basis.

New in version 4

New way to treat Pdf drawings

-Conversion to vector drawings

  • Optional conversion of pdf drawings that are produced by computer-aided design applications to CAD type drawings.
  • Various settings are available to optimize the conversion.
  • In case layers exist in the pdf drawing they are also available in the converted file.
  • The availability of layers, OSNAPS support and one click object selection can speed up the measurement process.

-Conversion to images

  • Advanced new tool is used to convert pdf drawings to images.
  • When adding drawings to a project the desired resolution can now be selected per drawing allowing better readability that can facilitate the measurement process.

Labels and tables on the drawing

-Automatic labeling                                                                                                                   (see an example)

  • Auto numbering and label creation on the drawing for all visible measurements and optionally on a selected region is now available.

    -On areas the description and result of the measurement is shown and optionally the dimensions on all sides on the perimeter.
    -On lengths all individual sections are counted and their dimensions are shown on the drawing.
    -On counting items all marking figures are numbered.

  • Label color and size can be defined along with a prefix and counting start number.

  • A new type of legend table was added where all visible measurements are shown along with their labels info.
  • It is now possible to have more than one legend tables on the drawing.
  • Direct detection: By double clicking on any row of a table with labels, the relative measurement shape is automatically selected on the drawing.

Faster auto-counting on image files

  • New option that speeds-up items search by scaling down both image drawing and search template. The use of the new slider has a major speed effect on big scanned or pdf drawings converted to images.
  • It is now possible to move and resize the search region instead of deleting it first and then creating a new one.

Automatic conversion of measurement result to different unit

  • Optional, automatic conversion of each measurement’s unit to the one of the work item, to which it is linked to, so there is no need to enter a formula anymore to convert its result. E.g. In case the drawing’s unit is feet and the relevant concrete work item unit is cubic yards (instead of cubic feet which is the basic unit volume for that drawing).
  • A unit aliases table has been added to the library allowing automatic conversion.
  • The automatic conversion affects not only the main (basic) measurement result but also when the extra results for the perimeter length (L), the area (A) and the volume (V) are used in the formulae.


  • It is now possible to change the program’s user interface to even more languages: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Hebrew, Greek and Turkish are the available options.
  • There is one set of custom measurements and general parameters for all languages now, so there is no need to add them per language any more.

Other features and enhancements

  • The add drawings form has been changed. Drawings analysis tool can be used before their final insertion to the project.
  • Visible drawing layers are saved now per user and measurement sheet so that when the sheet is reopened by the same user, to see it as he left it.
  • If there is only one default formula defined in a custom measurement then it is automatically added to the “Formula” field when linking the measurement to a work item.
  • When exporting data to tables new columns are available that show parameters values in expressions.

New in version 3.9

The main improvements compared to the previous version V3.8 are: 

New measurement methods

-Rectangular region

  • The new way of measuring using rectangles allows rapid measurement of rectangular regions with just 2 clicks at the edges of the diagonal. It is available in length, area and volume types of measurement. The new method can be combined with the rest ones in the same measurement.

-Length measurement by counting objects

  • A new way of measuring length by counting objects exist now as it has already been available in area and volume measurement types.

Adding drawings to projects is more flexible

  • The new way of adding drawings to a project allows multiple file selection from different folder locations in an editable list. Drawings preview is also available before their final addition to the current project.
  • It is possible to massively change the names that the drawings will have inside ExtrAXION and selecting the scale from a drop-down list instead of defining it on the drawing.
  • The resolution in dpi when converting pdf plans to images can be adjusted for better results.
  • When adding multi-page pdf files there is an option to delete unwanted pages from the list so they will not be added to the project.

Optimization of analysis documentation sheets

  • Hidden-frozen layers are not shown any more in analysis documentation sheets both in the main analysis region and the drawing’s thumbnail.
  • When editing analysis documentation sheets deletion of objects (shapes, dimensions, texts etc.) is also available.
  • Analysis documentation sheets can now be exported to various drawing file formats such as .dwg so they can be further edited using a CAD software.

Other features

  • The default system of units (metric, imperial) can be defined now. This system will be used when adding new drawings in a project.
  • It is now possible, instead of scaling on the drawing, to select the scale from a list of predefined values. The available default scales depend on the drawing’s unit system.
  • In the analysis window there is now an option to export to Excel the measurements tree too.

New in version 3.8

 The main improvements compared to the previous version V3.7 are:

3D measurement representation

  • It is possible to have a three dimensional view and to rotate drawings and their measurements for a better visualization and control over the measurements in space. E.g. roofs, walls and openings, which have been measured on the floor plan.
  • The 3D view allows the direct detection of errors which emerge from wrong dimension input. E.g. errors that might occur while typing the value of a parameter such as the height of a wall which has been measured with the method “vertically to the drawing”.
  • Measurements can be represented in three dimensions in vector drawings and even in scanned drawings!


  • It is possible to build automatically a legend that shows all visible measurements in a table on the drawing.
  • There are 3 different types of legend tables that include: measurements, work items along with their measurements and work items only.
  • A table can be moved around the drawing. It can be splitted in its rows and each row can also be moved and placed on the desired position to help the reviewer.
  • Legends can be he built massively for all open drawing sheets. One or all open drawings can be printed with the legend and all visible layers.

New measurement method ‘Line Enclosing point’

  • Automatic detection of the line that encloses a point that is clicked on the drawing to calculate e.g. surface area. The perimeter can be marked even in case it is a single polyline that is defined as non-closed or it consists of more than one individual lines or polylines. Applies to vector drawings.
  • The new ability to hide layers by right clicking on the drawing can also help to get better results when using the ‘Line Enclosing point’ method.


  • The area of an inclined roof can be calculated from the floor plan drawing.
  • The roof is calculated based on its slope, which can be entered either in degrees or in pitch.

Faster Measuring in scanned drawings using Polar track lock

  • Automatic activation of polar track locking option on image drawings that allows faster measurement of linear segments.
  • Continuous display of the current length when lines are drawn during the measurement procedure for higher precision.

Black and White View

  • Ability of Black and White view of colored vector drawings in order to clearly distinguish the measurements from the underlying drawing layers.
  • The Black and White feature is also available in the 3D view of drawings and their measurements.

Importing more than one Drawings simultaneously

  • It is now possible to select and add more than one drawings to a project simultaneously.
  • The drawings which are imported together can be in different formats (dwg, dxf, jpeg, pdf etc.)

Notes on drawings

  • It is possible to enter notes on drawings in order to point out highlights and clarifications for the drawing’s approver.
  • The user can specify and change the size, color and position of a note entry freely.

Other features

  • It is possible to rotate one or more measurements (free, about 90°, vertical and horizontal inversion). The rotation feature along with the copy feature speed up the measuring process in situations with plenty of similar areas, for example symmetric rooms in a hotel.
  • Area analysis is shown now in the expression field of all types of export tables. The .xlsx files that are produced by exporting those tables to Excel are ready for sorting, filtering etc.
  • Hide or show layers, by right-clicking on the drawing, for cleansing the background plan to eliminate any information that is not needed for measurements.
  • In both Vector and scanned drawings the scale can be changed at any point, even if there have already been made measurements on the specific drawing. The measurement’s shapes are readjusted automatically and their values are recalculated.
  • It is now possible to change the marking figure shape and size of existing measurements. It is also possible to use custom made count shapes which have been created using a CAD software.
  • Ability to insert the recently added work items in order to be linked to a new measurement along with all formulae. An already linked with a measurement work item can be easily replaced by another one without affecting the relevant formula.
  • Important expansion of the options which appear by right clicking for faster access to ExtraXION’s commands.
  • The user has the ability to define the line weight of each measurement separately.
  • The user can now adjust the crosshair to his liking, by changing the size and or the color of the axes.
  • It is now possible to change the program’s user interface to more languages: English, French, German, Greek, Spanish and Turkish are the available options.

New in version 3.7

 The main improvements compared to the previous version V3.5 are:

Length measurement on isometric drawings

  • A new option to manually enter the value in length measurements was added. It can be used on isometric drawings e.g. oil & gas, in cases where the scale is different per drawing region or if the user just wants to override ExtrAXION’s calculations.

Object Count 

  • Automatic object count is now possible even on scanned image files.
  • Automatic counting of blocks has been significantly improved. Users can now select a block directly on the drawing in order to count all its instances. Alternatively, each block can be chosen from a list of all available blocks, while the currently selected one is previewed.
  • Define a search region on the drawing, where object search will be limited to whether you are working on an image file or a vector drawing.
  • New option to define the size of the marker used for counting objects, in addition to its shape and color.


  • Visual comparison of drawings to identify changes between different versions. This way, alterations are easily detected and measurements can be modified accordingly. The comparison can be performed between image files or between vector drawings.

Copying and moving measurements

  • Users can choose parts of one or more measurements to be copied or moved on the drawing. Thus, the process of measuring in cases there are many identical objects e.g. windows on a facade, can be significantly accelerated.


  • Improved measurement analysis per work item and per sub-measurement with all measurement results, parameters and functions available. The area analysis (in rectangles, triangles, trapezoids etc.) of each figure is also shown.
  • Selecting and linking multiple work items to a measurement using the Ctrl or Shift key is now available.
  • Set the scale on vector files by directly typing it, choosing from predefined ones in addition to defining it on the drawing.
  • Users can now name each sub-measurement, as well as edit their names and parameters at a later time. Additionally, parameter values per node can be edited directly on the drawing. 

New in version 3.5

 The main improvements compared to the previous version V2 are:
  • Multi-user support. On a server installation more than one users have access to the same project simultaneously and they can even measure on the same drawing !
  • New ways of storing data: on an SQL Server database or on a local database file. A project may be exported from the central SQL Server Database and be saved as an .sdf file allowing users to work away from their office. This way a quantity surveyor is able to continue measuring on the construction site and later re-import the modified project file to the main SQL Server.
  • New, intuitive and flexible way of organizing and presenting drawings, measurement sheets and measurements.
    -Each drawing may include any number of measurement sheets and every sheet as many measurements you wish.
    -Measurements are presented in tree views, below the work items of the WBS and below drawings and measurements sheets.
    -Drawings can either be stored into the project, or used as external references.
  • Full measurement analysis either using template sheets, or exporting all measurements to excel. Areas are calculated by breaking down closed shapes into triangles, trapezoids, rectangles and circle sectors, with dimensions shown on the drawing.
    -Optionally, the area calculations can be performed using triangles only, which is useful for on-site measurement checking.
  • Support for importing multi-page pdf files.
  • Calibration option used for scanned drawings in both directions, to eliminate any distortion during copying or scanning.
  • Full support of US system units (ft).
  • Multilingual user interface.
